RE: Painting Exterior

In a couple years I would like to have this company do a full body repaint of my Newmar Kountry Star. Not cheap but if you want to refurbish the exterior to make your investment last this company appears to do the whole job right.Precision Painting of Bremen Indiana

RE: Rockin' for LOVE

Thanks to the OP's for the original question. The serious nature of the problem has crossed my DW's mind a few times, but the problem has'nt lasted long enough to require correction yet.:W This thread has been a barrel of laughs. Thanks Frank for keeping us on the straight and narrow and allowing us this good clean fun. The threads have been getting slow lately.

RE: Landing Gear Switch Cover

Mine is inside a locked box recessed into side of trailer. On my FIL 7 year old Titanium his exposed switches are all brittle and breaking. He has boughten new switches(their not cheap) and a locked RV box and I am mounting them in to the box and cutting the box hole and mounting the box in the side of his trailer next weekend. Should be a good modification project. If people are interested I will photo record it and post the pics during the process.

RE: Electric brakes HELP!!

The "C" indicator on the Prodigy should not be considered fool proof. I had a braoken wire going to one of my axles causing on 2 out or 4 drum assembly to acutate an provide braking. The Prodigy was not indicating any errors or failures. My noted my braking was insufficient one trip and during a fuel stop circle check (I trust everyone does this when they stop for fuel) I felt my trailer drums and noted that 2 were hot to the touch and the other 2 were stone cold. A quick check of wiring at axle showed the broken wire.

RE: Smart cars and Outlaws.Update

An co-worker of my wife's just traded in a smart car after having a disastrous 2 years with it. Purchasing the smart car was not a smart decision on his part as it was unreliable/costly and uncomfortable and he lost a lot at trade time. He traded it for a Canadian built Toyota.

RE: A Rookies Tale

Congrats, it's great to see people get into the lifestyle successfully and with their sense of humour intact LOL. Right now I am coaching a person who is renting a small Class C mtorhome for their first adventure this summer. Recent immigrant to Canada from eatern Europe who had never camped before. Can't believe all the things that I take for granted that comes with owning a RV for over 20 years that newbies need to learn. Once again enjoy your new RV and always keep asking questions.

RE: For those that have a Focus Or a Fusion

I have a 2008 Ford Focus 5-speed manual and I average 35mpg in hwy/town driving. If it's all hwy, I average 37-39mpg depending on how fast I'm going which is usually 75mph. I just filled her up yesterday and got 36.495mpg in mixed town/hwy driving which is alot better than my 2008 F-450. Jason: Thx for the real life numbers for your stick. My DW and I are close to buy the same vehicle. We have driven the auto and like it quite a bit, but my DW wants the stick. She likes to be in control.:W How do you find the manual gear box shifter? Is it relatively tight or is it lose and sloppy. We use to drive Volvo's and BMW's before the RV bug bit us so we are use to tight shifter patterns. Cheers Will

RE: Taking prepared food into Canada

We grocery shop in the US almost every week bringing stuff back and we as Canadians have never had any problems bringing back almost anything and evrything except 2 things. Blueberries and white potatoes due to bugs and disease. On the Canadian Dept of Agriculture website they detail in great dept the rules and regs of each and every fresh vegetable and fruit. The only 2 I have found with restrictions is indeed white potatoes and blueberries. I'm sure there are probably more but I could not find any. Now crossing from Canada into the US is another story. We travel with an empty fridge and pantry. It aint worth the hassle the US customer gives us when we use to try and bring food stuffs in the trailer into the US.

RE: NC. RV, HARLEY AND MY WONDERFUL WIFE

You have got to visit the Biltmore Estate right in Asheville. It is truly amazing. Largest single residence in North America. It is a 125K square foot home with 250 rooms, 34 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, several kitchens, a gymnasium, an indoor pool, an indoor bowling alley. Built in the style of a French Chateau. You literally will feel like you are in France looking at it. it was built by George Vanderbilt from 1887-1895 if I remember correctly. It is filled with art from around the world collected by George Vanderbilt of the New York Vanderbilt family overlooking the mountains. the estate is still owned by the family and consists of about 3K acres. It consists of a winery business, a seperate luxury resort, and a functioning farm. The drive way towards the house itself is 3 miles long. The interstate actually disects the property. amzing gardens and greenhouses along with 100s of thousand of different types of plants, trees and flowers hand planted on the property. Biltmore Estate website Enjoy. I'm going back again someday God willing to see more of it.

RE: Tire sidewall Blowout

i just went through the same process this spring and for what it's worth if you compare the Michelin XPS Ribs of a paticular size to the identical sized tire from another manufacturer you will note that the XPS RIB is 6-8 lbs heavier per tire for the same size and weight rating. You certainly may pay more for the Michelin, but you certainly get more rubber and steel than in a cheaper tire. Cheers

Heck they will probably horizontal drill right underneath Florida. BTW do you have any links are reference to this Chinese drilling off Florida?

RE: campground needed, Flint MI to canandian border off I-69

I know you said between Flint and the Canadian border off I69, but if you decided to stay on the Canadian side there is a very nice little campground about 12minutes east of Sarnia on County RD-22 just off the 402. Countryview RV Resort Eric and Vicky run a lovely clean safe little campground. I think their 08 rates are still $25 a night. They have a pool, playground, put-put golf, driving range, and fishing pond.

RE: Will a 6.0 gas or V-10 gas tow 12k pounds?

V10 and 12K lbs no problem's I pull 13k lbs with my V10 and other than being one of the slower vehicles climbing the mountains of the eastern seaboard it works great. I would look for a truck with the 4.30 rear end ratio though, it will alllow you to run in OD more and get a little better fuel mileage. You also will climb a little easier. Expect anywhere from 8-10 mpg towing and 12-14 mpg day to day highway driving. My FIL has a F250 with the 5.4L V8 with which he pulls a 8Klb fiver and he gets the same fuel mileage I get. I'm thrilled with how my V10 pulls and coming home this past weekend with the cruise set at 58mph I got a hand calculated 10.26 mpg. I'm not complaining at all with that fuel mileage when late model diesel's barely get 12 towing. Cheers Will

RE: BEWARE! Ontario RVers!

I saw this: "When determining RGW, only the tongue weight of a towed device or farm implement is included in the truck's RGW" here: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/trucks/regulations/annual.htm I see how you came to your interpretation, however on the same website as you saw that statement it also says this: "The registered gross weight (RGW) determines the fee paid for the truck's licence plates. RGW is based on, and must be at least equal to the actual weight of the truck and its heaviest load. Generally the weight of a towed trailer and its heaviest load are added to the RGW of the truck.." This is absolutely nuts.. I think this is worse than TAX Law!!!!! LOL

RE: BEWARE! Ontario RVers!

The way I understand it, even with the personal use exemption, the trailer PIN weight MUST be included in the RGW (registrered gross weight) to determine the licence plate fees ONLY. Also, after speaking to the person at my local licencing office and the Ford dealer, they both confirm that NO Super Duty trucks are issued with a "personal use Only" stickers because of the vehicle's base weight of 3000kg. But there is the definition of a "personal use pickup" written into the MTO regulations if you carefully read the "Daily Inspection and Maintenance requirements". I must admit it is very confusing to say the least. May I ask how you came to this understanding because your interpretation goes against what this government website indicates if your trailer is over 2800kgs. Determining RGW I'm not trying to argue I just don't want ot overpay a fee becasue of a beaucrats ignorance.

RE: BEWARE! Ontario RVers!

There is a new "AR" licence class coming into effect this June which will fit your bill - it's not the full "A" licence, but a restricted version thereof. You can find details on it HERE. About Time: On a second look what goood is the change for recreational RV'ers if all of the commercial regulations and requirements still exist to pass the test as Bruce states. It still does not address recreational drivers pulling trailers above 10,000lbs whohave no need to know the laws pertaining to commercial OTR hauling. Bruce: I don't see how you think your legal. Please convince me with some facts.

RE: BEWARE! Ontario RVers!

Privatepilot thats the weblinks I'm also looking at as well. Have a look at this though, with repsec tot registered truck weight on how to calculate the weight we must register our trucks for carefully and you will read that we must add the totoal trailer and truck weights together to get our truck registered weight if our trialers are over 288kgs Determining registerd gross weights cheers

RE: BEWARE! Ontario RVers!

When you register a heavy truck at the 4500KG limit (or less) the sticker should have been applied at the time you got the plates for it. If your registered over 4500KG right now, take your plates into your local MTO office and adjust your registration down to (or below) the 4500KG limit. You'll remove your annual requirement, and they should put the sticker on your plate then and there. If not, remind them. You do need to sign a certificate "confirming" that you are only going to use the vehicle for "personal transportation" before they'll provide the sticker, but that's just procedural. Now I'm confused (as always with our laws and MTO regs) . My truck has always been registered under the 4500KG limit and I've never been given or offered the sticker. My truck is registered at 3000KG and I see no reason to increase it to the 4500kg limit because even if I do that would still not make me legal since the Ontario regs require that the total weight of a towed trailer over 2800kg must be added to the truck weight for the truck to be correctly registered. That means that I would have to register my truck for 10900kg to be correctly registered, casuing me all sorts of other grief with respect to annual inspections. Curiously I saw the sticker for the first time today and it was on a Toyota Tacoma which can hardly be called a "Heavy Truck"

RE: BEWARE! Ontario RVers!

The trick is to make sure that your registered for 4500KG or less, and that you receive the little red "Primarily used for personal transportation" sticker for your license plate. . I just saw that sticker today on a truck. I had not seen or heard of it before. How does a person go about receiving one? Thanks Will
